If you have a fraud alert on your credit report, a business must verify your identity before it issues credit, so it may try to contact you. The alert lasts for a year and can be renewed year after year if you want. And it is FREE! Contact one of the credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) to ask that a fraud alert be put on your credit report and that agency will let the other two know to put an alert on those credit reports, as well.
